A general, easy to understand, textbook on how to do HIA internationally by one o the pioneers of the field of health impact assessment.

Disclosure: I peer-reviewed a draft of the book and have worked with Martin on a few HIA projects in the UK and internationally.
A really good companion to Martin Birley’s book above, edited by John Kemm, one of the UK pioneers of health impact assessment. It provides a constructively critical overview of the field of HIA include key debates. Even though this is now 17 years old, this is an essential text for anyone practicing HIA.

This book explores the past development of HIA, its current practice, and possible future. Written in two parts, the first section provides an overview describing the various ways in which an HIA can be done. Practical in emphasis, it describes how HIA can be applied in different contexts to meet the needs of different decision makers and answer a variety of questions. It deals not only with the many good reasons for using HIA but also critically examines the weaknesses of current practice.
This is one of my favourite books, as it gives a good overview of the historic development of HIA. Though I need to-re-read this, some aspects are missing such as the international WHO-related HIA work by Martin Birley, Robert Bos and Peter Furu, and in the UK work by Erica Ison and Anthea Cooke.

This is one of the earliest books on HIA, when the field where the focus was on environmental risks and therefore environmental health impact assessment seemed a reasonable name to use, rather than the broader phrase health impact assessment.
Buy from AbeBooks, they are used but good quality. much cheaper than brand new.
