Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing else but medicine on a large scale.
Medicine, as a social science, as the science of human beings, has the obligation to point out problems and to attempt their theoretical solution: the politician, the practical anthropologist, must find the means for their actual solution…
Science for its own sake usually means nothing more than science for the sake of the people who happen to be pursuing it. Knowledge which is unable to support action is not genuine – and how unsure is activity without understanding…

This was a qualitative study of members of the Swedish Sámi community, involving six in-depth interviews (three men, three women). Five key themes were identified:
Current impacts
It’s like a battle between ‘David’ (the community) against a ‘Goliath’ (the mining company).
It’s a slow process of challenging the community that takes a lot of power and energy.
It’s about defending and protecting ourselves.
Future impacts

Check out the other country networks for HIA. If you don’t see your country’s network listed pleas email me using the link on the top right and we’ll add it as soon as possible.
This is a longstanding email group, going back to 2002!
It has an international group of subscribers and is useful if you have information, projects and materials to share or have a question you’d like an answer to.
Set up by the Asian Development Bank and Curtin University WHO Collaborating Centre on Health Impact Assessment. This has been going since 2017.
The network’s aim is to provide knowledge and build capacity to assess and manage the health and well-being impacts on communities associated with the establishment of new development proposals.
The Network emerged from a series of projects supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to build capacity in HIA in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). This work included the development and delivery of HIA courses and guidelines across the region. The aim is to expand this work and develop other HIA activities across the Asia Pacific region.
The best way to see what they do is their Facebook page.
